Water is life, essential for human existence, and its importance for individual health as well as the well-being of a nation and access to good quality water cannot be overemphasized. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Access to the water supply was 67% and access to sanitation facilities was 41% as of 2017. “An estimated 100 million Nigerians still lack basic sanitation facilities and 63 million do not have access to an improved source of drinking water”.  The use of contaminated drinking water and poor sanitary conditions result in increased vulnerability to water-borne diseases.

Due to the poor investments of the Nigerian government in water supply, many have resulted in the construction of boreholes as an alternative source of potable water. Proliferation and Contamination of groundwater can pose a serious public health risk and as well as a long-term environmental hazard. Usage of such water may result in serious health complications such as irritation in the eyes, skin and mucous membrane, typhoid, and death.
