2nd – Poem by Nathaniel Dado

LETTER TO A DISTANCE FATHER.

when i see you
i will not be glad
i will not jump in cheers, nor celebrate

when i see you
i will not fake tears of joy
nor smile to your abode return
and dance to the rhythm of
your words

when i see you
oh father
i will not remember
the pains you put me through
nor the troubles or struggles

when i see you
i will not remember the striving to survive
nor the bubbles of troubles at my feet
the pains and agony
the anxiety and anxiousness of a better day

when i see you
i will be thankful that you are not the
the light at the end of my tunnel
but i was the light in the tunnel

when i see you
i will be thankful that you came
but not to your responsibilities
because i am a responsible being

when i see you
i will give you a mild smile
not because you came
but because i made it in your
absence
i will be thankful that you are not my hero
i will be thankful that i fought the
battle alone like the lone-ranger soldier
in the desert

when i see you
i will not remember the long distance search for you
i will be thankful that i did not see you
nor find you

when i see you
i will not remember the day the teacher ask me
orphan are thou oh child
nor the garments of mockery worn on
me by my peers and friends

when i see you
i will be thankful
that you came
you are what i am thankful for
